UBI – The University of Beira Interior, and Aerospace Sciences Department

The University of Beira Interior (www.ubi.pt) is a national and international reference institution in education, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. An institution of extraordinary dynamism UBI has invested in the creation of well-equipped laboratories, in the expansion of its facilities, in the involvement in research projects of national and international scope, and qualified teaching staff. Two of the hallmarks of this University is the provision of laboratories in all teaching areas and teacher-student proximity education. With approximately 7000 students this institution has more than 30 undergraduate or master courses, about 40 2nd cycle/master courses and about 25 3rd cycle/ Ph.D. courses. UBI has five faculties: Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Arts and Letters, and Faculty of Health Sciences. Currently, UBI has more than 600 teachers and 270 employees.

The Aerospace Sciences Department (DCA) was established in 1992 at UBI to coordinate graduation in Aeronautical Engineering, created in 1991, explicitly devoted to qualifying senior technicians in the areas of aerospace sciences, and response to the insufficient supply of qualified human resources in this field at a national level. Currently, the DCA is wholly engaged with the Bologna process and is responsible for a Master degree in Aeronautical Engineering (a five years graduation recognized by the Portuguese Chamber of Engineers). Thus,  it qualifies the students for the profession of aeronautical engineer, characterized by carrying out the design, construction, production, inspection, quality control and management in the aviation industry as well as the related research activities. As part of the graduate studies, the DCA is responsible for a Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering too, with an emphasis in advanced training, aiming at a high scientific qualification and performance of professionals in both industry and academic environments. Since the beginning students are involved in research activities and projects within the research centers sponsored by the Foundation for Science and Technology: Associated Laboratory in Energy, Transports and Aeronautics (LAETA),  C-MAST (Centre Centre for Mechanical and Aerospace Science and Technologies)  and the IST Institute for Research and Innovation in Civil Engineering for Sustainability (CERis). The DCA has specific and well-equipped laboratories to support teaching and research activities.

The areas of scientific activity are Transportation in general and Air Transport, Operations Research, as well as several in the scientific domain of Aeronautical Engineering. UBI/DCA participated/participates in 8 national and international projects within the framework of Agência de Inovoação – ADI – “SIMUAV – Design and Implementation of a Simulator for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles”, “AIRDEV-Business Models for Airport Development Management” – Massachusetts Institute of Technology -MIT, “DesAIR: Design of Environmentally-friendly Structures for AIRcrafts” under the support of FEDER, “EFATraS – Environmentally-Friendly Aeronautical Transport Systems”  under the support of Quadro de Referência Estratégico Nacional -QREN, European Project FP7 “MAAT – Multibody Advanced Airship for Transport”, “DAISY – Impact Analysis and Cost-Benefit Analysis of Countermeasures on Airport infrastructures” co-funded by the European Commission  – DG Home, and in COST action TU1408 – Air Transport and Regional Development (ATARD) (www.dca.ubi.pt).

NIT-TRT – Transportation Research Team undertakes the air transportation research multidisciplinary activities within DCA. NIT-TRT links essential and applied research to more complex air transportation issues. Thus, this research team is focused on Air Traffic Flow Management, Air Transportation Infrastructures (Planning, Operation, Management, and Economics), Airline Operations (Management and Economics), Aviation Safety (including Weather Conditions) and Security, Human Factors in Aviation, Flight Instrumentation, and Environmental Impact of Aviation.

NIT undertakes interdisciplinary research activities involving other modes of transportation too and exploring concepts as intermodally and interoperability. NIT activities are directed towards state of the art developments and to enhance the scientific ability of aeronautic engineering students with specific goals to improve knowledge mainly in the advanced fields of Air Transportation and Airports, Aircraft Operations, and Flight Safety and Security (www.nit.ubi.pt).
